Nobody living in the Middle Ages called them that. The name came later from Renaissance writers who saw a thousand-year gap between classical Rome and themselves, and meant it as an insult. The centuries they dismissed built the CASTLE and the GUILD, worked out the SERFDOM that fed both, and left the TAPESTRY that tells us what any of it looked like. This word find collects eleven of those words.

What was a GUILD?
An association of craftsmen in one trade who controlled training, quality and price in a town. Getting in took years as an apprentice, and staying out meant you could not legally sell.
How did SERFDOM differ from slavery?
A serf was bound to the land rather than owned by a person, could not be sold separately from it, and held customary rights the lord was expected to respect.
