Most of the puzzles built here start as a spelling list. A teacher pastes in the week's words on a Sunday evening, prints twenty copies, and has Monday's warm-up done. It works the same way for a vocabulary set, a science unit, or a list of irregular verbs, the grid does not care what the words mean, only how they fit.
The other common use is a party or classroom activity built around names: every child in the class, every guest at a birthday, every member of a family reunion. Seeing your own name buried in a grid is a small, reliable pleasure, and it takes about ninety seconds to make.
Getting a good grid
Ten to fifteen words is the sweet spot. With fewer than eight, the grid ends up mostly filler and the puzzle is over in a minute. Past twenty, words start overlapping so heavily that the letters stop reading cleanly.
Mixed lengths beat uniform ones. A list of ten five-letter words is oddly hard to search, because nothing stands out. Throw in one long word and one short one and the grid gets easier to scan and more satisfying to solve.
Watch the first letters. If six of your words begin with S, the usual trick of scanning for a distinctive opening letter stops working, which makes the puzzle harder than the word count suggests. Sometimes that is what you want.

How many words can I put in a puzzle?
Ten to fifteen works best. Fewer than eight leaves a grid full of filler letters; more than twenty and the words start crowding each other into unreadable overlaps.
Can I use my own spelling or vocabulary list?
That is what it is for. Paste the list in, and the words go straight into the grid as they are written, including names, subject terms, or another language.
What if a word will not fit?
The generator tells you which one it could not place, usually because it is longer than the grid or clashes with everything already on it. Shorten the word, or raise the grid size.
Does the printed version include the answers?
Yes, puzzle on page one, answer key on page two. Print both, or just the first page if you want to keep the solution to yourself.
