July is named after Julius Caesar, and the CALENDAR he introduced in 45 BC, with a leap day every four years, ran in much of Europe until 1582. Before that he was CONSUL, conquered GAUL with his LEGION, and crossed the RUBICON to start a civil war. This julius caesar word puzzle takes eleven words from his rise and fall, ending with the IDES of March; the ancient rome grid covers the city itself.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RUBICON?
A small river marking the border of Italy. Roman law forbade a general to bring an army across it, so when Caesar did in 49 BC there was no going back, which is why the phrase still means a point of no return.
What was the TRIUMVIRATE?
An informal alliance of three men, Caesar, Pompey and Crassus, who shared power from 60 BC. When it broke down, Caesar fought Pompey and won, then ruled as DICTATOR until BRUTUS and other members of the SENATE killed him in 44 BC.
