Christopher Columbus made four crossings of the ATLANTIC between 1492 and 1504 and never set foot on the mainland of North America; his first landfall was an island in the BAHAMAS. Born in GENOA, he sailed for Queen ISABELLA of Spain with three ships, the NINA, the PINTA and the SANTAMARIA, the last of which ran aground off HISPANIOLA on Christmas Eve 1492. This christopher columbus word find takes eleven words from those voyages; the explorer grid on this site covers the wider age of sail.

Frequently asked questions
Did Columbus discover America?
Not in any simple sense. People had lived there for thousands of years, and Norse sailors had reached Newfoundland around the year 1000. What his VOYAGE did was open lasting contact between Europe and the Americas, with consequences, including conquest and disease, that are still debated.
Why is ISABELLA in the grid?
Because the trip was hers as much as his. Queen Isabella of Castile financed the first VOYAGE after Portugal had turned him down, and the NAVIGATOR sailed in a CARAVEL she paid for.
