Reconstruction Word Search, free printable PDF preview

Reconstruction ended in a bargain rather than a vote: a disputed presidential election in 1876 was settled by withdrawing federal troops from the SOUTHERN states, and what followed was SEGREGATION rather than EQUALITY. The words in this word find come from the twelve years before that, when the FREEDMEN BUREAU built schools and the terms CARPETBAGGER and SCALAWAG were invented as insults.

Frequently asked questions

Who were the FREEDMEN?

People freed from slavery by the war and the amendments that followed. The federal bureau set up for them ran schools, courts and labour contracts across the south.

What did SHARECROP mean in practice?

Farming someone else's land for a share of the crop. Debt to the landowner often grew faster than the share, which kept families tied to the same field for decades.
