The peace symbol was drawn in 1958 by the British designer Gerald Holtom for a march against nuclear weapons; it combines the flag semaphore signals for N and D, for nuclear disarmament. This grid gathers the language of making peace, from the DOVE and the olive branch to a TRUCE, a CEASEFIRE, a signed TREATY and the slow work of DIPLOMACY. Words run across, down, backwards and up.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a truce, a ceasefire and an armistice?
A TRUCE and a CEASEFIRE both pause fighting, usually for a set time or while talks go on. An ARMISTICE is a formal agreement to stop fighting, like the one signed on November 11, 1918; a full peace TREATY may come later, or not at all.
When is the International Day of Peace?
September 21 every year. The United Nations created the day in 1981 and fixed it to September 21 in 2001 as a day of global ceasefire and NONVIOLENCE. This word puzzle suits that day or any lesson on resolving conflict; pair it with the kindness grid.
