Harriet Tubman Word Search, free printable PDF preview

Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery in MARYLAND in 1849, then went back about thirteen times and led some seventy people to FREEDOM, many of them all the way to CANADA. She was the most famous CONDUCTOR on the Underground RAILROAD and, by her own account, never lost a passenger. This harriet tubman word puzzle covers that work and what came after: NURSE and SCOUT for the Union Army, the COMBAHEE River raid of 1863, and a late campaign for women's SUFFRAGE.

Frequently asked questions

Was the Underground RAILROAD a real railroad?

No. It was a network of safe houses and guides that helped people ESCAPE north before the Civil War, run largely by the ABOLITION movement. The train words were code: stations, conductors, passengers.

What happened at the COMBAHEE River?

In June 1863 Tubman guided Union gunboats up the river in South Carolina, a raid that freed more than 700 enslaved people, the first armed operation in the war led by a woman.
