Once the joins feel steady, the next thing to build is rhythm — an even, unhurried pace where the hand keeps moving and every letter gets the same amount of room. Everyday food words are ideal for that: chocolate, doughnut, pasta, apple, bread, potato, sushi. They’re words a child reads on packages and menus daily, so they’re already familiar, and their mix of tall letters (b, d, h, l, t), descenders (g, p), and round bodies (a, o, e, s, u) runs the hand through a good range of shapes in just a few words.

Practicing pace. Cursive rewards a steady tempo. Write each word at a slow, constant speed rather than dashing the easy letters and stalling on the hard ones — uneven speed is what produces uneven spacing. A useful drill: write a word once slowly and carefully, then a second time trying to match that first copy exactly.

Tall and low letters. These words are full of ascenders and descenders, so they’re a good place to check proportions: tall letters reach the top line, descenders drop just below the baseline, and round middle letters fill the space between baseline and midline.

The first sheet prints each word once at the start of its line and leaves the rest for you; the second traces all the way across so you can follow the join without a break.

The food set is ready to print above, or make your own themed list in the worksheet maker.
