Trace the whole line
Single letters teach the shapes; words teach the joins. These sheets move from isolated letters to familiar animal words — elephant, penguin, dolphin, giraffe, rabbit, turtle, monkey — where the real skill lives: carrying one letter smoothly into the next without lifting the pen.
Why animal words. Children already know them by sight and sound, so attention stays on the handwriting instead of on decoding. At six to eight letters each they are long enough that the hand has to sustain a join across a whole word, not just link two letters and stop. Saying each word aloud while writing it links the letter shapes to their sounds — handwriting practice and reading reinforcement in a single pass.
What to focus on. Even spacing is the goal: connectors inside a word stay tight and consistent, while the gap between words stays about the width of one letter. Watch the trickier joins — anything leading into or out of a looped letter (the g in giraffe, the l in elephant and dolphin) is where spacing tends to break down.
The first sheet gives you each word once at the start of the line and leaves the rest of that line for you to carry on; the second traces the full line so you can follow the shape the whole way across. Every word here also has a matching word search, linked below.
