The sandwich is named for John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, an English nobleman of the 1700s who is said to have asked for meat between two slices of BREAD so he could eat without leaving the table. Every region has since named its own: a HOAGIE in Philadelphia, a PANINI pressed in Italy, a REUBEN grilled at the DELI. This sandwich word find has eleven of them and the parts in between, from the CRUST to the LETTUCE.

Three slices of TOASTED bread instead of two, stacked with turkey or chicken, bacon, lettuce and tomato, then cut into quarters and held with picks. It dates to American clubhouses of the 1890s.
Is a WRAP a sandwich?
By most definitions yes: a FILLING held by bread, even if the bread is a flat tortilla rolled around it rather than two slices.
