What makes a word a sight word?
Frequency plus irregularity. It turns up constantly in simple text, and sounding it out gives the wrong answer, so it has to be learned as a shape.
Does a puzzle help with sight words?
Recognition is the skill being taught, and searching a grid is recognition practice with no sentence around it to guess from.
