Scuba started life as an acronym, self contained underwater breathing apparatus, coined in 1952 by the American doctor Christian Lambertsen for a breathing device he had designed. The gear has changed since, but the checklist has not: MASK, FINS, TANK, REGULATOR and a BUDDY. This word find goes through that kit. The site's swimming grid covers the pool; this one is for open water.
Frequently asked questions
Why is OCTOPUS in a diving word search?
Divers use the name for the spare second stage on a REGULATOR, a backup mouthpiece a BUDDY can breathe from if their own air runs out.
Why do divers come up slowly?
Nitrogen absorbed at depth needs time to leave the body. A fast ASCENT can cause decompression sickness, so divers are trained to rise slowly and make a safety stop near five meters.
