In 1962 an advertising executive named Martin Speckter invented the interrobang, a question mark and an exclamation point fused into one symbol, and it never caught on. The marks in this word find did: PERIOD, COMMA, SEMICOLON and eight more that every writer uses daily. Spelling them is its own test, since APOSTROPHE and PARENTHESES trip up plenty of adults.

Frequently asked questions

What does an ELLIPSIS mean?

Three dots that mark words left out of a QUOTATION, or a sentence that trails off. In a quotation it tells the reader something was cut.

Is a PERIOD the same as a full stop?

Yes. Americans say PERIOD, while British English calls the same mark a full stop. BRACKETS split the same way: in the UK the word often means round brackets, which Americans call PARENTHESES.
