There is no land at the North Pole: it sits on drifting sea ice over Arctic Ocean water more than 4,000 meters deep, and the sun rises there only once a year. This grid mixes the real place, with POLARIS overhead, the midnight sun, a DOGSLED and the MAGNETIC pole that wanders, with the storybook one, where the LETTERS pile up in Santa's MAILBAG. Who reached the North Pole first?
It is still debated. Robert Peary and Matthew Henson said they reached it by dog sled in 1909, but their navigation records have been questioned. The submarine Nautilus passed beneath the pole in 1958, and the first surface trip confirmed by an independent position fix was Ralph Plaisted's snowmobile EXPEDITION in 1968.
Is this a Christmas word search?
Partly. Most of the words belong to the real Arctic and a few to Santa's North Pole, so this word puzzle works in December and in a polar science lesson.
