Three of figure skating's jumps are named after the skaters who first landed them: Axel Paulsen in 1882, Ulrich Salchow in 1909 and Alois Lutz in 1913. All three are in this word puzzle, along with the TOEPICK, the LAYBACK spin and the CHOREOGRAPHY that ties a program together. Words run across, down, backwards and up. For hockey, curling and the rest of the cold weather lineup, see the winter sports word search.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the Axel the hardest of the basic jumps?
It is the only one that takes off going forward, so a single AXEL needs one and a half turns in the air instead of one. A triple Axel is three and a half rotations.
What is the toe pick for?
The jagged teeth at the front of a figure skate blade. Skaters dig the TOEPICK into the ice to vault into toe jumps like the LUTZ; the AXEL and the SALCHOW take off from an edge instead.
