Hibernation Word Search, free printable PDF preview

An arctic ground squirrel in deep hibernation lets its body temperature fall below freezing, to about minus 2.9 degrees Celsius, the lowest ever recorded in a mammal. Its METABOLISM and HEARTRATE slow so far that one winter's fat can last for months. This word find collects the vocabulary of that long sleep, from the HIBERNACULUM where an animal spends it to the reptile version, BRUMATION.

Frequently asked questions

Do bears really hibernate?

It depends who you ask. A black bear's body temperature drops only a few degrees, far less than a GROUNDHOG's, which is why bear winter sleep was long called TORPOR. Many biologists now count bears as hibernators because their metabolism slows so sharply.

What is the difference between BRUMATION and ESTIVATION?

BRUMATION is the winter slowdown of snakes, turtles and lizards, which may still wake on warm days to drink. ESTIVATION is a summer version, used by some frogs and snails to survive heat and drought.
