Great Barrier Reef Word Search, free printable PDF preview

The Great Barrier Reef stretches for over two thousand kilometres off the coast of Queensland, the largest living structure on Earth. It is built by the coral polyp, a tiny animal that takes calcium from the water to grow a stony skeleton. A partnership called symbiosis with algae feeds it and gives the reef its color, which is why bleaching, when the algae are lost, is so dangerous. The reef is a nursery for countless fish, including the clownfish, and a magnet for snorkeling. This word puzzle gathers eleven of them.

Frequently asked questions

What causes bleaching in this great barrier reef word search?

BLEACHING happens when stressed coral expels the algae living in it. Without them it loses color and its main food, and can starve if the stress lasts.

What is a coral polyp?

A POLYP is a tiny soft bodied animal. Millions of them, each building a CALCIUM skeleton, together form the entire reef over thousands of years.
