Most of the energy in a food chain never reaches the top: as a rough rule, only about a tenth passes from one level to the next, which is why there are far fewer lions than gazelles. This grid follows the chain from SUNLIGHT and the PRODUCER to the PREDATOR, then the SCAVENGER and DECOMPOSER that recycle what is left. Words run across, down, backwards and up. Deserts, tundra and reefs are in the ecosystems word search.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
A food chain is a single path, such as grass, rabbit, fox. A FOODWEB shows many chains linked together, because most animals eat more than one thing and are eaten by more than one PREDATOR.
What do decomposers do?
A DECOMPOSER, such as a fungus or bacteria, breaks down dead plants and animals and returns their nutrients to the soil, where a PRODUCER can use them again. It is a handy word puzzle for a science review.
