Day of the Dead Word Search, free printable PDF preview

La CATRINA, the elegant skeleton in a wide feathered hat, began in the early 1900s as a satirical print by the Mexican engraver José Guadalupe Posada, poking fun at people who dressed to look European. Today she is everywhere on November 1 and 2, when families build an OFRENDA to welcome the dead home. This word find gathers eleven words from those two days, from PAPELPICADO banners to PANDEMUERTO, the sweet bread of the dead.

Frequently asked questions

Is Day of the Dead the same as Halloween?

No. It falls on November 1 and 2, right after Halloween, but it is a family remembrance, not a scary night: families set an ALTAR with photos, food and MARIGOLD flowers for their ANCESTORS. The site's Halloween grid covers the costume side.

Why marigolds?

Their strong scent and bright orange color are said to guide spirits to the ofrenda. In Mexico the flower is called cempasuchil, from the Nahuatl language.
