Church Word Search, free printable PDF preview

For much of the Middle Ages there was nowhere to sit in church: worshippers stood or knelt in the open NAVE, and fixed PEWS only became common from the 1400s onward. This grid walks through the building and the Sunday service, from the bell tower and STEEPLE outside to the PULPIT, ALTAR and ORGAN inside. Words run across, down, backwards and up. The christian word search covers beliefs and sacraments instead.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the main part of a church called the nave?

The word comes from the Latin navis, meaning ship. The long central hall where the congregation sits was often compared to a ship carrying its people.

What does an usher do in church?

An USHER greets people at the door, helps them find a seat in the PEWS and often hands out the order of service or collects the offering. It is a friendly word find for a Sunday school class.
