The name came from Philadelphia police in the 1960s, describing the traffic and crowds they had to manage the day after Thanksgiving. The tidy story about shops moving into the black is a later invention by retailers who disliked the original. Either way the vocabulary stuck, and this word find collects it: the QUEUE before opening, the DOORBUSTER that draws it, the IMPULSE buy at the CHECKOUT and the RETURNS that follow in December.
Frequently asked questions
What is a DOORBUSTER?
A deeply cut price on a small number of units, advertised to get people through the door. The stock usually runs out early, which is the point of it.
Is a MARKDOWN the same as a DISCOUNT?
A markdown is a permanent drop in the ticket price, usually to clear stock. A discount is taken off at the till and the original price stays.
