Medium grids start from 32 givens, so 49 cells are open, eight more than an easy puzzle. That gap is small on paper and large in practice: the pattern where a row has one obvious blank left mostly disappears.
Expect to get roughly two thirds of the way by scanning, then stall. That stall is the point of this level. It is where you start noting two or three candidates in a corner and letting the eliminations do the last stretch for you, which is the habit every harder grid depends on.

Do medium sudoku puzzles need pencil marks?
Usually for the last stretch. Scanning gets you roughly two thirds of the way, then you will want to note two or three candidates in the cells that are close, and let other placements eliminate them.
Is medium a good everyday level?
It is the level most regular solvers settle at. Long enough to be worth sitting down for, short enough to finish over a coffee, and it rarely stalls hard enough to be annoying.
Can I still solve it without guessing?
Yes. Every grid here has exactly one solution reachable by logic alone. If you are guessing on a medium puzzle, there is a deduction you have walked past.
