A 6×6 grid uses the digits 1 to 6 across 36 cells, with 14 given and 22 to work out. The boxes are 2 tall and 3 wide rather than square, which is the one thing that trips children up on the way over from 4×4.
This is the right step once 4×4 stops being interesting but a full 9×9 still looks like too much. The logic is identical; there is simply more of it, and a child will start to need a second pass over the grid rather than solving it top to bottom in one go.
